Iringa Baskets Square Open Weave - Natural
Sometimes all you need to clean up is a place to put … everything. Say hello to the Iringa Baskets.
These baskets are handmade by women artisans using local sustainable and biodegradable fibers in rural Iringa in Tanzania. Iringa baskets are an indispensable utility item of Tanzania’s Hehe people. The larger baskets are handwoven by a female artisan over the course of a week carefully intertwining the patterns.
These durable baskets are handwoven from Milulu, a reed-like grass that grows near the city of Iringa, Tanzania. The Milulu grass must be harvested along certain rivers in Tanzania’s Southern highlands. This often requires long walks to collect the grass, then carry it back to the artisan’s local village. After is has been harvested, it must be dried in the sun to prepare it for weaving. This is definitely a labor of love. Thank you supporting and empowering the women artisans in Iringa, Tanzania!
Iringa Baskets are both classic and modern. They are great at organizing your home in style or can be used as a sturdy planter. These baskets are durable and perfect for the decorator looking for form and function.
Our baskets are handmade and no two pieces are the same. Variations in size, color and design will occur.
Spot clean using minimal water. Use a paper towel or cloth to dab so as to prevent the colors from bleeding. Let the basket dry completely to avoid molding. To preserve the natural colors, do not place in direct sunlight.
If basket is out of shape, wet in shallow water to mold into desired shape. Leave the basket to dry.
Dimensions: We carry these baskets in six sizes.
