Iringa Baskets Square Open Weave - Natural

$ 72.00

Sometimes all you need to clean up is a place to put … everything.  Say hello to the Iringa Baskets.

These baskets are handmade by women artisans using local sustainable and biodegradable fibers in rural Iringa in Tanzania.  Iringa baskets are an indispensable utility item of Tanzania’s Hehe people.  The larger baskets are handwoven by a female artisan over the course of a week carefully intertwining the patterns.

These durable baskets are handwoven from Milulu, a reed-like grass that grows near the city of Iringa, Tanzania.  The Milulu grass must be harvested along certain rivers in Tanzania’s Southern highlands.  This often requires long walks to collect the grass, then carry it back to the artisan’s local village.  After is has been harvested, it must be dried in the sun to prepare it for weaving.  This is definitely a labor of love. Thank you supporting and empowering the women artisans in Iringa, Tanzania!
